Diesler - Keepie Uppies

Jonathan Radford’s Diesler project reinforces the Cherrystone’s notion that every cloud has its silver lining (or every piece of vinyl has a sample on it). Diesler is a one-man bandito who grew up out in the sticks near Burnley and still resides in the surrounding valley. Early musical influences included a varied selection of artists including David Holmes, To Rococo Rot, Can, Andy Votel, Cherrystones, and The Remote Viewer to name a few: film is also is a big influence, with the combination of score, sound effects and images paralleling the densely-produced collage of instrumentalism and beats in Jonathan’s music.

Bonobo - Dial ‘M’ For Monkeys

At 18, he moved to Brighton where he released his debut album Animal Magic on the Tru Thoughts label in 2000. With this album, completely self-produced and mainly self-instrumented, he became one of the "new downtempo pioneers" and his chilled, beat-driven music captivated press as well as many major labels.

In 2001, Bonobo decided to sign for Ninja Tune and in 2003, after one album of remixes on Tru Thoughts in 2002, he released Dial 'M' For Monkey. In 2005, Bonobo contributed to the Solid Steel series, with his Bonobo Presents Solid Steel: "It Came From The Sea", the release date was scheduled for October 10, 2005, but was released a week early, the mix features several exclusive tracks as well as remixes and re-edits.

His latest album, entitled Days to Come, was released on October 2, 2006, the first single from the album was "Nightlite", featuring vocals by Bajka. Following the success "Days to Come" his tracks have appeared in a number of media-related items. Days To Come was voted Best Album of 2006 by Gilles Peterson's listeners.

Babylon Circus

Babylon Circus is a French ska-punk/alternative rock band that has been incorporating a wide variety of influences. The exuberant, horn-driven outfit has favored a bilingual approach; lead singer David Baruchel sings in both French and English--and many of their songs have tackled political and social topics (for example, the Iraq War--which they strongly oppose-- became a major subject for Babylon Circus in 2003). Formed by Baruchel in Lyon, France in 1995, Babylon Circus started out as more of a straight-ahead ska band. But they ended up becoming a lot more experimental and eclectic, drawing on everything from reggae (which came out of ska) to British punk to jazz (especially guitarist Django Reinhardt's Parisian gypsy swing of the 1930s and 1940s) and cabaret. Babylon Circus is an appropriate name for the band because some of their material has, in fact, been influenced by circus music--and their other influences range from French chanson (as in Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel) to African pop to East European folk (mainly gypsy music from the Baltic region). The list of artists who have influenced Babylon Circus either directly or indirectly is a long one, ranging from classic Jamaican ska and reggae stars like the Skatalites, Toots & the Maytals and Bob Marley & the Wailers to British punk pioneers the Clash to the French world beat band Lo'Jo. Some of their work has hinted at early Tom Waits, and British ska revival bands of the 1970s and 1980s such as Madness and the Specials have also affected their far-reaching work.

Chick Corea - Three Quartets(1981)

]Between the tides of Return To Forever and The Elektric Band, Chick Corea's recording projects focused
on more intimate acoustic ensembles. Of these, the superb THREE QUARTETS is the best of the bunch.
Recorded in 1981 at Corea's own Mad Hatter studio, it features the pianist at his creative best as
well as his favorite partners Michael Brecker, Eddie Gomez and the inimitable Steve Gadd. Few other
records of this period contain the powerful musical energy that was created when these four virtuosos
came together. The performances captured on this album are stunning. The complex "Quartet No. 1" offers
a punchy melody that explodes into a furious solo by Brecker. The softer "Quartet No. 3" follows with
dramatic chordal work by Corea and expressive solos by Brecker and Gomez. The epic "Quartet No. 2" is
one of Corea's most dynamic works. The first section, a swinging ballad, is dedicated to the great
Duke Ellington. The second, which features a mesmerizing solo by Gadd, is a hard swinger for John Coltrane.
Bonus tracks include Corea's unforgettable "Hairy Canary" and an amazing Gadd/Brecker duet on
Charlie Parker's "Confirmation."

Chick Corea (piano);
Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone);
Eddie Gomez (bass);

Pharoah Sanders - Rejoice(1981)

This was the first Pharoah Sanders album I bought way back in 1982 and I guess the rest is history.
I snapped up most of his catalogue over the years (posting many of the harder to find Impule lps here)
and have seen him play live on numerous occassions.I still rate this double vinyl set as much now as
I did then so here it is ripped from the original Theresa vinyl @320.I can't find it posted anywhere
else in Blogland which is surprising so another first at Orgy In Rhythm.
Very Highly Recommended.

Personnel: Pharoah Sanders (tenor saxophone, vocals, bells), B. Kazuko Ishida, George V. Johnson (vocals),
Danny Moore (trumpet), Steve Turre (trombone), Lois Colin (harp), Bobby Hutcherson (vibraphone),
Joe Bonner (piano, background vocals), John Hicks (piano), Peter Fujii (guitar, background vocals),
Jorge Pomar (bass, background vocals), Art Davis (bass), Babatunde (drums, percussion, background vocals),
Elvin Jones, Billy Higgins (drums), Big Black (percussion, background vocals).

A two-LP set on Theresa this features Pharoah Sanders in excellent form in 1981. Sanders sounds much
more mellow than he had a decade earlier, often improvising in a style similar to late-'50s John Coltrane,
particularly on "When Lights Are Low," "Moments Notice" and "Central Park West." The personnel changes
on many of the selections and includes such top players as pianists Joe Bonner and John Hicks, bassist
Art Davis, drummers Elvin Jones and Billy Higgins, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, trombonist Steve Turre,
trumpeter Danny Moore, a harpist and (on "Origin" and "Central Park West") five vocalists.
The music always holds on to one's interest, making this one of Sanders's better later recordings.

and relaxed jazz can be.

Especially on the opener Contracts meet all the above aspects. How beautiful the two

CODONA III(1982)

Biography
CODONA is a fusion jazz trio born during the late 70’s.
CODONA’s name is derived from the leading letters of the first names of its three members.
It has an Indian feel due to the presence of sitar/tabla player Collin Walcott (“co”).
He is accompanied by the trumpeter Don Cherry (“do”) who is a founder of free jazz,
(notably worked with the Indian jazz fusion artist L. Shankar),
the adventurous Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos (“na”),
also known for his work with the Pat Metheny Group. N...CODONA is a fusion jazz trio
born during the late 70’s.

Next to Walcott personal “eastern” touch, this project is also a great fusion between
several “world” influences, from Africa, to Japan. Three “eclectic”, “ethereal” albums have
been released for ECM.
They are all essential for fans of "world" fusion jazz music.

Rip Rig & Panic - I Am Cold(1982)

Biography by John Dougan
Named after a terrific '60s jazz album by Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Rip, Rig & Panic answered the question:
What happens when avant-garde post-punks collide headlong with a pop/soul singer and play a mutated form of jazz?
A loosely knit collection of ex-Pop Group members (Gareth Sanger and Bruce Smith) and young stars-to-be (Neneh Cherry),  Rip, Rig & Panic formed in 1980 as quintessential avant-garde bohemians. They eschewed pop for a more primal, percussive foundation (slightly reggae, slightly Afro-pop), upon which was layered free jazz blowing and honking, soulful singing, and Cecil Taylor-inspired piano mania. But, as intense as this music was, it wasn't done with a dry academic seriousness; quite the contrary,  Rip, Rig & Panic were all about fun and playfulness. Even the song titles ("Constant Drudgery Is Harmful to Soul, Spirit & Health"  and "Those Eskimo Women Speak Frankly") sounded more like surreal announcements than they did traditional, catchy song titles. Arguably the most likable bunch of avant-garde types ever to record music, Rip, Rig & Panic called it a day after three mostly wonderful, if somewhat inconsistent records. If your taste in music, even fringe music, is such that a strong melodic focus is necessary, than perhaps this won't be your cup of tea. However, if you don't mind a little chaos with your funk, then give this heady mix a chance; it will work its way into your heart, head, and feet. As for the members, Bruce Smith joined Public Image Ltd. for a spell, and Neneh Cherry became a huge pop star (deservedly so) with her first solo record.

Slickaphonics - Modern Life(1984)

Trombonist Ray Anderson's forays into instrumental funk, blues, and R&B
led him to form the Slickaphonics. What distinguishes this group from a

Shakti - Natural Elements(1977)

I do not believe there is a "best" Shakti album. All of them are brilliant and exhilarating and essential
like chapters in a book. _Natural Elements_ does, however, stand out as the most lyrical and beautiful
of Shakti's albums from the 70s, in my opinion. Shakti is a pluralistic group adapting some Western
jazz idioms with an Indian environment, and here they also capture the widest range of moods.
John McLaughlin straddles the line dividing Western and Eastern musical traditions, bridging the two
with his guitar as his soul burns along the fretboard. Such is evident enough from the get-go, with
"Mind Ecology", a fast-paced opener penned by McLaughlin, tearing along the pattering gallop of
earthen percussion. But to celebrate their virtuosity as an end in itself would be a dishonor.
"Mind Ecology", for all its speed and wild playing, exemplifies the "hidden" allure of Shakti
-- the incredible virtuosity of these musicians is just a means to an end. The end of course being
the articulation of an thrillingly joyful disposition, infectiously spiritual and focused.
"Baby Baby Come Dance With Me" and "Happiness Is Being Together" are merry, vivacious jewels
sparkling in the desert sands. The heavenly "Face to Face" and "Bridge of Sighs" slow that Shakti is
just as engrossing when softened and calm. "Peace of Mind" is a spare beauty (that is unfortunately short)
written by McLaughlin, where Shankar's violin renders a rapturously crying melody over gentle strumming.
Definitely one of the most lovely moments in Shakti's discography. "The Daffodil and the Eagle"
is exquisite, charged with the clairvoyant interplay that is typical of this group, with lead instruments and
percussion entwining magnificently. Hearing them live would be the most prime way to experience the
group's sheer acumen and togetherness, but for the diasporal Shakti, _Natural Elements_ is definitely
essential. If you've never heard Shakti, this is as good an introduction as any.

Shakti - A Handful Of Beauty(1977)

So you've heard Remember Shakti, and now you want to hear more. Every time I listen to the new
material I think the band should be called Remember Shtickti, because that's what it's about these days.
Their shtick? Slow, meditative beginnings...the introuduction of rhythm...fiery solos...finally, call and
response climaxes. Be that as it may, the guys that do this these days - McLaughlin and his South
Asian comrades - are all top-notch virtuosos, so even that sort of predictable music is wildly entertaining
(unless you really know and dig Hindustani music, which makes Remember Shakti sound like Indo-Enya
or Indo-Yanni). However, when you hear "Handful of Beauty" you will be hearing a work of true genius.
Every cut is amazing. There is an epic, forlorn quality to this music that's very much missing from their
modern stuff. John McLaughlin's playing (my opinion, obviously) reached its absolute peak in this time
period. The guitar he cradles on the cover was like an extension of his brain. He's obviously well-versed
in Indian aesthetics and technique, as he never descends into "exotic-sounding" playing, i.e. dipping into
chromatic and harmonic minor scales, a la Roger McGuinn, Yngwie Malmsteen, or even Jimmy Page.
Some of his most virtuoistic, soulful and sincere playing is to be found on this recording. While perhaps
not on par with that of the greatest Indian musicians in an Indian context, it is still exceptional. Then again,
he's not *trying* to be an Indian musician, but rather, apply his knowledge of Indian music and filtering it
through his years of jazz, rock and fusion experience. No duh, right? Anyway, this is a true gem of an album.
It surpasses their debut and subsequent album as well. As wicked as songs like "Joy" and "What Need
Have I for This? What Need Have I for That? I Am Standing at the Feet of My Lord...All is Bliss...
All is Bliss" are, the muddy production and thin-sounding instruments of the first album seriously detract
from the album's overall quality. The third album ("Natural Elements") is good, but the songs are shorter
and some are a little hokey too. They never quite reach the heights they seek, though one song on
"Natural..." does feature one of McLaughlin's coolest-ever funky strumming riffs, one that cleverly uses
both his normal six strings and the eleven drone strings. "Handful of Beauty" reaches into the stratosphere
and stays put for the duration. The quiet longing and classic McLaughlin harmonies in the last piece, a
violin/guitar duet, are an amazing finale. Did I mention violinist L Shankar? He's monstrous on this album.
So are Zakir Hussain and Vikku Vinyakaram, but they're not the focal points for this album, though it would
be incomplete without them.

Shakti - Shakti With John McLaughlin(live 1975)

Review by Richard S. Ginell
For his next act, the decibel champion of electric jazz shocked the world by unplugging and returning to South
Indian music before an excitable audience at South Hampton College. Yet the alert John McLaughlin follower will
note that beyond the reliance upon South Indian instruments and scales, there are unbroken links to records like
My Goal's Beyond and the high-speed electric music that McLaughlin was casting aside at the moment. McLaughlin
called his new quintet Shakti, which means "creative intelligence and beauty and power" and the music here has
all of that and something else, a ferocious streak inherited from the Mahavishnu days. McLaughlin ignites "Joy"
by playing at a blazing speed, his cohorts Lakshminarayana Shankar (violin), Ramnad V. Raghavan and T.H. Vinayakram
(mridangam), and Zakir Hussain (tabla) keeping up with the furious unison tempos with great dexterity and discipline,
while a reworking of "Lotus Feet" forms a meditative interlude. Side two is taken up by a single, lengthy raga-like
track in which McLaughlin combines his rapid-fire Western manner with note-bending techniques clearly emulating a sitar,
and the Indians get plenty of dueling room. In its way, this fire-eating acoustic music is just as energizing as the
most electrified Mahavishnu flights.

Tracklist:

  1. Shakti - Shakti With John McLaughlin - 1. Joy

  2. Shakti - Shakti With John McLaughlin - 2. Lotus feet

  3. Shakti - Shakti With John McLaughlin - 3. What I need I have for this - What I need I have for that - I am dancing at the feet my Lord - All is bliss
